Comments: This is a fantastic site! I LIVE on a WWII LCVP, here in Richardson Bay in Marin County, CA. There are several Landing Crafts in this harbor, which have been converted into "houseboats". I am currently photographing these and hope to document the builders of the hulls. It is my understanding that LCVP's were built by Chris Craft as well as Higgins. Is this correct? Several years ago, I was fortunate to receive 3lbs. of line drawings from the Pentagon's Navy Dept. and have used them as guides when hauling out for bottom jobs. Also, the keel bolts had rusted through and the keel fell off (so we discovered the last haul-out session) but there still was no water in the bilge. I still have the keel and wonder if anyone knows of or can suggest a museum which might be interested in preserving it for history? Thank you for any help and/or info anyone can provide.

Comments: Hello all,
My grandfather has many fond memories of a Higgins boat he had converted into a sport-fisher in the early 60's, he had gotten rid of it in the mid 70's. After all his memories he always talked about, I went to see if I could find it anywhere. He had last seen it in Charleston harbor in Oregon about 1987 so I wasn't sure it was even there. After scouring all of the docks I went back to the boatyard because there were docks back there, and there it was. It had been pulled out of the water because of a leaky chine and a rotten stem, but it is otherwise still solid. I'm planning to make a model or two of it, and now that I know what boat it originated from, I can have a very much easier time building the model.

Photos of it can be found at http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1341006&a=10441396

Comments: As a ticket salesman at the DDM I see the veterans when they 1st enter the museum. A very large number look at the LCVP and make comments like, "that boat is like the one I landed on," and from some men, "that's my boat." When a asking if they was a coxwain, the answer often is not that he drove it, but he landed on it.

Thanks for the BOAT, the DDM would not be complete without it. I love to see, Marvin and Jim and others that I have not become as friends with, at the boat to talk about it and their involvement.

Comments: I visited your museum this past week. While I only had time to review the displays once, my plans are to return and spend much more time studying the entire museum.

Comments: Great project. I have never seen a LCVP in the flesh and never thought I would as all were gone. Great work! If only a handful of our children get to see and learn how and who used it, we will all be better for it. HONOR ALL WHO SERVED IN ALL OUR NATIONS WARS! They have no greater LOVE than to give their Lives and Futures for US! As the great seal of the US depicts WE come in Peace but we must be ready to make War! HONOR to YOU!

Comments: To whom it my concern,
Very rarely in this day and age do we see a more true example of honor, loyalty, and courage than those brave men that I have seen in these photos. Even at my young age, I am coming to realize just what those men gave on the beaches of Normandy over fifty years ago. I am thrilled to be able to see that the sacrafice that those brave men made has not gone unnoticed.
I would just like to take this chance to say to the men that fought and died so that I and this country would remain forever free; THANK YOU. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.
I know that your sacrifice will not go unnoticed and especially not unlearned because of this ceremony and the other monuments dedicated to the memory of those who fought and died for America.

Thank you again,
Caleb Davis

Comments: I served with the U.S Navy in the Pacific aboard the USS Yavapai APB 42 (LST 676). Our ship had 6 Higgins LCVP's. I was a boat engineer and participated in landing the 3rd and 4th US Marine divisions at Iwo Jima.
Your boats were great - I am proud to have been a crew member in them.
God bless Mr Higgins and the men and women that built these LCVP's.

Comments: What a wonderful tribute to a tough little boat and the man who designed her. I served as an assault craft engineer aboard the USS Cavalier (APA 37) from 1964 till 1967. It's hard to believe that there's so few left, I guess time moves on. My wife and I have just returned from touring the Normandy beaches and gained a new appreciation for the obstacles overcome by the assault craft crews and the troops they carried. Gator Navy all the way!
